US Senator Chuck Schumer has blasted China for its soft statement over Hamas’ attack on Israel. The US leader expressed his displeasure in a meeting with Chinese envoy Wang Yi.
Chuck Schumer is currently leading a US delegation to China as were present there when Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu declared a ‘state of war’ on 7 October 2023.
Chuck Schumer Condemns China
Bloomberg quoted Chuch Schumer, “I was very disappointed, to be honest, by the foreign ministry’s statement that showed no sympathy or support for Israel during these tough, troubled times”.
Schumer further urged the Chinese envoy and people to stand with Israeli citizens and condemn the “cowardly and vicious attacks”.
Wang Yi stated to the delegation that he hopes for China-US ties to get back on track.
China’s Statement on Israel
China on 8 October in an official statement urged both sides to “immediately end the hostilities to protect civilians and avoid further deterioration of the situation”.
In its statement, Beijing urged for implementation of two-state solution and “establishing an independent State of Palestine”.
Notably, the Chinese statement had no mention of Hamas or atrocities perpetrated against Israelis.
Human rights and Chinese firms’ involvement in the American fentanyl problem were the other topics on the agenda at meeting. Schumer also expressed to Wang his desire to prevent China from aiding Russia’s military operations in Ukraine.
US-China relations have been deteriorating recently owing to Washington’s sanction over certain technologies to Beijing while the latter’s aggression regionally has been criticised by Washington.
