An explosion in a mosque in Baghlan, Afghanistan, killed at least 10 people and injured dozens.
According to Taliban sources, an explosion occurred inside a mosque in the northern Baghlan province of Afghanistan during Friday prayers, killing 10 people and injuring dozens others. No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the blast.
Some local and other media sources of Afghanistan say that at least 17 people were killed and more than 20 injured in the explosion.
Eyewitnesses say that the explosion took place in the afternoon at the “Imam Zaman” mosque in the centre of Baghlan’s Pul Khumri city, where hundreds of people went to pray.
Moulvi Hashimi, a Taliban official in Baghlan, previously said “This explosion happened in a Shia mosque.” Officials say the dead and injured are being taken to the hospital, but did not mention the number. Hashmi did not say what kind of explosion it was, saying that investigations are still ongoing.
A resident of the area, Shamsullah, who owns a shop next to this mosque informed that he was entering the mosque when there was a loud explosion.
“The situation was very bad. Friends, relatives, friends and some of our neighbours were injured and are in the civil hospital. Seven or eight of our neighbours were martyred. The number of dead is not known yet”, he said.
Videos of the explosion have been published on social media, in which it can be seen that the mosque is covered in blood. The dead and injured have been taken to the hospital.
No armed group has immediately claimed responsibility for this attack. In the past two years, after the Taliban came to power, the ISIS group has taken responsibility for a number of major attacks in several cities, including Kabul, on schools, mosques, and other public places, in which hundreds of people were killed and injured.
