Videos, especially of women in compromising positions, have been often used as a tool to blackmail and humiliate women and often drive them to take drastic steps. Recently, a shocking incident came to light from Udupi in Karnataka where three female Muslim students recorded their fellow Hindu female students in the restroom. If reports are to be believed, these Muslim girls had plans to further circulate that video.
This shocking incident made many people on social media recall the horrifying 1992 Ajmer scandal which shook the collective conscience of the nation. Hundreds of girls, especially Hindus, were lured into grooming, blackmailing and sex tapes by members of politically powerful families.
As per some media reports, three female Muslim students from Netra Jyoti College in Udupi, Karnataka have been caught filming the fellow Hindu female students in the washroom.
As per local media reports, these videos were circulated on a Whatsapp group. The managing committee of the college stated that they took action and suspended the girls as soon as the incident came to their notice.
The management further stated the suspension on two counts – first was the illegal filming of the fellow female students in the restroom and the other one was the breaking of rule to bring in a mobile phone, which is banned in the college.
‘Ladki Hu Lad Sakti Hu’, Women Safety Only A Topic For Campaigning For Congress?
To put things in perspective, Udupi was in news recently when the Muslim girls had raised the hijab issue. Hijab, which is not a part of school uniform, was banned from schools. However, upon being instigated by the Campus Front of India (CFI), the student wing of now banned terror group Popular Front of India (PFI), the Muslim students decided to ditch education for their ‘right to wear’ the hijab. Hijab, they claimed, was essential to their faith. However, it is not so. In fact, many women in Iran led the hijab revolution recently where they burned the symbol of patriarchy and oppression.
The hijab issue was made a global cause by some invested elements via social media propaganda. What was a debate on school uniforms was made into an attack on minorities, when there was none.
In educational campuses which have radical elements blended in, this kind of incident of recording of women in restrooms is shocking to say the least. The reports suggest that these three Muslim girls wanted to record other girls of a particular community, that is Hindu girls, and circulate them.
This has again brought to fore the discussion around the 1992 Ajmer scandal. I am talking about one of the most shameful chapters of Indian history! If you don’t know what happened then, let me give you a little brief on it here –
The 1992 Ajmer scandal revolved around serial gangrape and blackmailing of more than 500 school and college-aged Hindu girls in Ajmer, Rajasthan. The incident drove many girls to take drastic steps, and many ended their lives because of humiliation faced. The matter came to light when a local newspaper “Navjyoti” published the story of how school students are being blackmailed by local gangs.
As per some reports, some members of the Ajmer Youth Congress including their president Farooq Chishti were some of the accused who molested and blackmailed these young Hindu girls. Most of the accused were Muslims and many from the family of Khadims.
Khadims are the families of traditional caretakers of the Ajmer Dargah. They claim to be the direct descendants of the first followers of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti and hold significant influence in the local communities. The police had stalled the case because the local politicians warned action against the accused would strain communal harmony.
Although due to high political influence and administrative incompetence, the matter was suppressed to the point that the witnesses and the victims turned hostile and the details got buried. When will we stop using women to satisfy political needs or demean a community? Let us know in the comments what your opinion is.
