Republic Day is celebrated every year on January 26 in India to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution. This year, India celebrates 75 years of adopting the constitution.
Prior to Independence on 15th August, 1947, India was colonised by the British. In fact, even after Independence the country followed British laws, some of which are being followed even now. But, as a newly independent nation, India needed its own framework to match its democratic ideas and rich culture. After many discussions, the Constitution was completed and adopted on November 26, 1949. But it came into force on January 26, 1950. Since then, January 26 is celebrated as Republic Day to remember this important change.
This year, India will celebrate its 76th Republic Day. The event will show the country’s culture, military strength, and progress in technology. The President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, will be the chief guest. A 160-member marching team and a 190-member band from Indonesia will also join the parade, along with India’s armed forces.
There will be 31 tableaux in the parade. These are special displays from different states, Union Territories, and central government departments. The theme this year is ‘Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas’, which means ‘Golden India: Heritage and Progress’. After the National Anthem, balloons with the logo celebrating 75 years of the Constitution will be released. The event will end with a flypast by 47 aircraft.
The Republic Day Parade will start at 10:00 AM at Kartavya Path in New Delhi. The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, will first lay a wreath at the National War Memorial to honor soldiers. The President will arrive in a ceremonial carriage and take the salute during the parade. The parade will have marching groups from the armed forces, paramilitary forces, NCC (National Cadet Corps), NSS (National Service Scheme), and others.
Before the parade begins, 300 cultural artists will play the song ‘Sare Jahan Se Achha’ using traditional musical instruments from different parts of India. These include instruments like the shehnai, flute, dhol, and many more. The music will represent India’s diverse culture and unity.
The parade will last for 90 minutes. It will have 18 marching groups, 15 bands, and 31 tableaux. Around 10,000 special guests have been invited this year. These guests include people who have done well in different fields and those who have benefited from government schemes. This is being done to encourage ‘Jan Bhagidari’, meaning public participation.
This year, two famous Indian aircraft, the Tejas fighter jet and the Dhruv helicopter, will not take part in the flypast. The Dhruv helicopters are undergoing safety checks, so they might not be ready for the parade.
The 31 tableaux will include displays from 16 states and Union Territories and 10 government departments. Goa will show its cultural heritage, Jharkhand will present its progress and history, and Uttar Pradesh will focus on the Mahakumbh 2025.
The Veer Gatha project is also part of the Republic Day celebrations. It is a program to inspire children with stories of bravery from the armed forces. This year, 1.76 crore students from all over India participated. From these, 100 winners were selected. They will be honored on January 25 in New Delhi by the Defence Minister and Education Minister. These children will also attend the Republic Day Parade.
