One of the leading news agencies of India The Press Trust Of India shared a video of a vegetable seller of Varanasi on its twitter handle on Sunday i.e., June 9th, 2023. Later, it was revealed that the vegetable seller was actually Samajwadi Party worker Ajay Yadav.
What is the matter?
Press Trust of India in one of its videos on Twitter showcased a Samajwadi Party worker as a vegetable vendor. In the video, two bouncers could be seen guarding the tomatoes at the vegetable shop, who tried to create a ruckus at the sight.
However, while responding to PTI, Ajay Yadav alleged that the incidents of looting are taking place due to the high prices of tomatoes, due to which the bouncers have been deployed to avoid any dispute.
The SP leader further went on to say that during the reign of PM Modi, the people have been suffering from inflation and also that the tomatoes are being sold at Rs. 160 per kg.

Infact, the SP leader bought tomatoes worth Rs. 500 and then removed the shopkeeper and sat down by himself. Soon after the matter came to light, the local police station detained the actual vegetable vendor Raj Narayan, his son and other unknowns. Raids were also conducted in search of the SP leader.
To add to this whole incident, SP leader Akhilesh Yadav shared a video on his official twitter account and wrote that the BJP should give Z plus security to tomatoes.
From the incident, it seems that the whole narrative behind this act was the intention of the leaders of Samajwadi party to highlight that inflation was skyrocketing in the country during the Narendra Modi-led government. Although the reality is different from what is portrayed.
PTI clarification
The PTI news agency however later deleted the video from its twitter account as soon as the truth came along. They even issued a statement, clarifying that the vegetable vendor is actually a SP worker. Also the information given by the SP worker to PTI will now be questioned. PTI further alleged that they failed to verify the source of the video before posting it and also that they would now try to be neutral about the incident.
Clouds of Trouble
Soon after the incident came to the limelight, an investigation team by VDA was sent to the vegetable seller Raj Narayan’s house to check whether the house was built as per the authorised rules or not.
As per some media reports, if the house fails to be constructed as per the required rules then it would be demolished by the VDA with bulldozers. A Municipal corporation team inspected the vegetable seller’s house to check whether he had encroached on the land or not. Also, a team from the Revenue Department went to inspect the spot.
