Tension arose in Hariyana’s Mewat after stones were pelted on Brij Mandal Jalabhishek religious Mewat yatra organised by Vishwa Hindu Parishad(VHP) and Bajrang Dal on Monday (July 31, 2023).
The stone-throwing incident occurred near a chowk around 2 km from the temple. Stones were also thrown at Vishwa Hindu Parishad workers and vehicles were also set on fire.
There are reports of firing between two opposing parties but the police sources are yet to confirm.
Some local groups have been suspected of carrying out the attack because they issued a warning against the yatra when cow vigilante Monu Manesar, one of the suspects in the Nasir Junaid case, stated his intention to participate. The yatra has been stopped as of now as over 10 individuals have been injured and are being treated at various hospitals.
According to reliable sources, officials are considering suspending internet access throughout the district since many people from Rajasthan have begun to migrate to Nuh and communal tensions have risen high.
A top official said that there has been a conflict and the police are attempting to restore order.
Mewat Under Suspicion
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) disrupted a hawala module in September 2018 and detained three terrorists affiliated with the Falah-e-Insaniyat Foundation, a group headed by Hafiz Saeed’s Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Mohammad Salman, Mohammad Salim, and Sajjad Abdul Wani were named as the accused. Salman, interestingly, was a Mewat inhabitant from Uttawar village.
A month later, it was revealed that the Khulafa-e-Rashideen mosque in the same area was funded by the terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Forced religious conversion
Mewat is also referred to as a hub of forced religious conversion. Mewat Model School in Haryana came under scrutiny in 2017 when reports of forced conversions arose.
It was claimed that Hindu students were duped into accepting Islam and performing namaz. Teachers thrashed students who refused to convert to Islam.
When the situation was brought to light, the District Magistrate acted quickly and suspended both the instructorsMoinuddin and Warden Arif. Another instructor who was charged in the case was reassigned. A victim student described how students were smacked in the dormitory for refusing to adopt Islam.
In January 2018, a Dalit family in Mewat’s Mohlaka village was brutally beaten by goons for refusing to convert to Islam. According to reports, the family was also subjected to casteist remarks.
Kishan, the complaint, stated that a man named Islam was pressuring them to adopt his faith. Islam and his associates, Taufeeq, Mosim, Ataru, and Asmina, assaulted the Dalit family with sticks and iron rods after they refused to give in. Kishan was severely injured during the assault.
In July 2019 a man identified as Hzar Khan was arrested for the conversion of a 22-year-old wife to file a false case of sexual assault against people and extort money.
With the blood-curdling murder of a 21-year-old student named Nikita Tomar in Faridabad in October 2020, a terrible episode of attempted love jihad and forced conversion of non-Muslims into Islam came to the fore.
Two guys shot her dead in broad daylight outside the Aggarwal College in Ballabgarh, Faridabad.
Cow slaughter
Mewat has always been a hotspot for cattle smuggling. The authorities entered the home of a guy called Nishad in the Arandka hamlet in January 2019 and seized cow meat and skin.
The cops discovered 20-22 kgs of meat and cowhide in a neighbouring field. The event occurred in the Tijara district of the Alwar district, which is part of the Mewat region.
In February of that year, a vehicle illegally transporting eight calves broke past a police roadblock near Ferozepur Jhirka in the Nuh district and mowed down the Additional Superintendent of Police.
In October 2019, a group of six cow smugglers shot a Bajrang Dal member in the Delhi NCR region as they attempted to flee towards Mewat from Gurugram’s Sector 10.
Mewat-Home of Rohingyas
A big number of Rohingya Muslims are said to have settled in Nuh village in Haryana’s Mewat district.
According to a Jagran article, the Rohingya illegal immigrant has been providing shelter to the residents of Nuh village, which is inhabited by Muslims.
Nuh is claimed to be a hotbed of organised criminal operations including livestock smuggling, sheltering Rohingyas, and stone-throwing against police.
Following their removal from Delhi, the majority of the Rohingyas sought refuge in Haryana. According to reports, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has protested the presence of Rohingyas in Haryana, claiming it is a danger to national security.
