On October 1st, an incident of violence erupted in Karnataka’s Shivamogga district following an Eid Milad-un-Nabi procession, taken out by the members of the minority community. Stones were pelted at nearby houses and policemen, which resulted in injuries to four people. Soon after this, Section 144 was imposed in the city’s Ragigudda area.

What actually happened?
The trouble began after some Muslim youth erected a large portrait of Tipu Sultan, depicting killing warriors dressed in saffron. Some groups raised objections against it and soon there began stone hurling.
Shivamogga SP GK Mithun Kumar reached out to the leaders from both communities to maintain peace. SP also urged them to cover the portrait with a curtain to prevent the situation from escalating further.
But the situation further worsened, after a Muslim youth used his blood to inscribe the words “Sher Tipu” on the portrait.
There were several other visuals doing rounds on social media, where the members of the Eid Milad procession could be seen dancing with swords in their hands.
There was also a visual of a rotating sword being carried out in the procession.
It is a failure on the part of the Karnataka government to give way to such demeaning acts during a religious procession.
