Jews and gays should avoid visiting so-called Arab areas in Germany’s capital Berlin. Yes, this is a real statement and what’s even more surprising, this was said by the chief of Berlin Police.
According to the Berliner Zeitung newspaper, Berlin’s police chief Barbara Slowik stated, “There are certain neighbourhoods where the majority of people of Arab origin live, who also have sympathies for terrorist groups”.
She further said that certain neighbourhoods in Berlin exhibit open anti-semitism and homophobia. Barbara then says crimes of violence against Jews are still low.
But then what spurred this question to Barbara?
Attack on Makkabi Berlin
Recently, Makkabi Berlin, a Jewish youth football team was assaulted by a Pro-Palestine mob which was armed with sticks and knives. The team faced this incident after a match in the Neukölln neighbourhood, which has significant Arab and Turkish population.
Makkabi Berlin, founded in the 1970s by Holocaust survivors, was the first Jewish sports club established in the German capital after the Second World War.
The club members and their fans have reportedly faced anti-semitic abuses earlier too.
However, the statement of Berlin’s police chief has not gone down well with social media.
Author Saul Sadka mockingly wrote on Twitter, “It took 90 years, but Jews and gays need to try and hide their identities in Berlin again”.

A Twitter account wrote, “Within living memory of the Shoah, Jews are being told they should hide their identity. In Berlin”.

For those unaware, In Hebrew, Shoah is known as the Holocaust. In 1985, a French documentary named Shoah was also released which was about the Holocaust when during World War 2, millions of Jews were systematically killed on the orders of German dictator Adolf Hitler.
One question — which many would ask to Berlin’s police chief, what are you doing about those with sympathy to terrorist groups? And why is the German administration sheltering such dangerous individuals in the first place?
